National Sports Festival Delta 2022– Before we dive into Coach Tony Nelson and his midas touch antecedents including his current feat, lets take an overview of the stage of his latest conquest.

The just concluded National Sports Festival hosted by Delta State was the 21st edition.

The sports rendezvous involves qualifying states participating in series of sporting events for medals.

Some of the sporting events include Basketball, Football, Judo, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Wrestling, Boxing, Football, Athletics(Track/Field) and many more.

So far so good its been an outstanding competition and a beehive of activities at the Stephen Keshi township stadium as well as all other locations where various sporting events are held in and around Asaba, Delta State.

All basketball events(Male and Female) were held at the outdoor court in Ogwashi-ukwu metropolis.

Team Bayelsa(Female) led by the man with the midas touch; Coach Tony Nelson was fully represented.

Coach Tony has a knack for winning competitions as far as high school basketball is concerned.

From winning multiple national milo championships,  Coach Tony Nelson has etched his name in fine print on the sands of basketball times.

It would also interest you to know that this is the first time team Bayelsa would be winning a Gold medal in Basketball at the national sports festival….A feat Coach Tony pulled off easily? Lets find out.

Fun Fact 1: The team consist highly of  students from St Jude’s Girls Secondary School, Bayelsa, who won this year’s edition of Nestle Milo secondary school championship tutored by “you-know-who”.

Fun Fact 2: Two of the players in this gold medal winning squad were also members of the Milo championship team; Angel O. Michael and Abigail Isaac.

It wasn’t really an easy road to the Gold medal for team Bayelsa as they lost to host team Delta(27-23) in their first game, but that did not deter them from bouncing back in their next match as they trashed Team Ondo (44-28).

Till now we are still trying to know the kind of pep talk Coach Tony Nelson gave to his team, as the trashed their next opponent Team Imo (62-25).

The cruise control continued as Team Bayelsa did justice to both Team Zamfara (46-29) and Team Abia states (49-29) respectively.

The team however met with another powerhouse in female basketball at the semi finals; team Rivers but also snatched a win (43-32).

Without further ado, team Bayelsa and Coach Tony Nelson proved their might when they again met and schooled the host state team Delta in the finals of the competition to clinch the much coveted Gold medal(43-35).

The incumbent president of the NBBF Engr Musa Kida was on ground to present the medals to the winners.
