Next to Soccer, Basketball is one of the most populous team sports in the country as it boasts of being one of Africa’s most successful teams at an international level.

Both Nigerian men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the Olympics on multiple occasions and have won multiple All-African Games titles in basketball. Read about this here

By February 8 -11 (2024) the Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament shall be hosted in Belgium with Nigeria expected to compete with the United States, Belgium, and Senegal. Read about this here

The Nigerian male soccer team (Super Eagles) who are currently not doing so superbly despite being three times African champions and is currently rated sixth on the continent and 40th in the world.

Despite our bad behavior associated with poor preparations, the Nigerian government has bolstered the soccer team alongside other sporting federations with NGN12,000,000,000 billion naira. Read about this here

Back to Nigerian Basketball, with less than a month to the commencement of the OQT in Belgium, no funds are currently being made available to initiate call-ups and start a training camp for the team.

Our bad behavior (poor preparations) has always paid off over time but time will tell how this pans out again.

On the flip side, while other teams are ramping up their preparations we are facing the possibility of non-participation for lack of funds.

The government has just played politicking with the announcement of the NGN 12BNaira for soccer and other sports when no funds have been paid.

I may be wrong on Soccer but stand to be corrected on Basketball.
