Meet Theresa Anya Joy Ebiega, a professional basketball player for First Bank Basketball Club in the Zenith Women’s Basketball League.

Her journey with basketball began at a young age when she represented her secondary school in various competitions.

Theresa, who hails from Benue state, developed a deep passion for the game while attending basketball matches with a close friend.

I love playing this game, and I believe it instills positive character traits,” she expressed.

When it came to choosing between basketball and football, Theresa’s decision was influenced by her secondary school’s impressive basketball team.

“In my secondary school days, we had a fantastic basketball team with numerous medals. I was captivated by their outstanding performances, which led me to choose basketball,” she explained. “I also had a training partner in school.”

Her school’s participation in the Milo secondary school competitions resulted in Theresa winning two gold medals and a bronze medal, cementing her position as one of the top performers on her team.

Her success continued three years later when she secured a gold medal with Gilalian in the South Side Basketball League in Kaduna.

During this competition, Theresa averaged 12.4 points per game, displaying her scoring prowess.

In 2016, she joined the Nigerian Customs team, spending a year with them before moving to the Kaduna team (formerly GT2000, now Kada Queens).

This transition marked a turning point in her career, as she consistently contributed with over 15 points in nearly every game.

Her contributions helped the Kada Queens qualify for the final 8 for the first time in the club’s history, although they ultimately finished 5th in the competition.

Her exceptional performance caught the attention of First Bank Basketball Club.

Hard work paid off for Theresa at First Bank Basketball Club, where intense training led to overall improvement in her game.

In her quest to expand her horizons, she moved to First Bank and delivered numerous match-winning performances.

Notably, her ball-handling skills and ability to penetrate crowded defenses with intricate footwork stood out, making her one of the top point guards in Nigeria.

She came close to representing Nigeria Womens Basketball team at the Afrobasket Championship, but was dropped last minute.

As she aspires to represent Nigeria’s D’Tigress on the international stage, Theresa also aims to inspire girls who share her vision believing they too can make an impact in basketball.

“I’ve always dreamed of representing my country. It’s a dream I won’t give up on, and I want to reach out to girls like me because I know we can lead impactful lives as basketball players,” she concluded.

She also earned recognition as an All-Star at the Crown Elite Awards, and she recently achieved victory with First Bank Basketball Club in the Louis Edem Basketball competition.
