There are a whole bunch of kids plying their basketball trade outside the shores of the continent and Tosan Evbuomwan is not left out.

Whether through being born to Nigerian immigrants or immigrating directly to the United States via sports scholarship opportunities, there consistently remains a significant portion of NBA draftees with African heritage.

Although the name Tosan Evbuomwan may sound unfamiliar to many, he is a 6’8 96kg forward with great potential.

Here are some very important facts about Tosan you thought you knew;

  • Tosan was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents.

  • As a student his father played basketball in Lagos, Nigeria before leaving the shores of the country to study gynecology in the UK.
  • His mother (late) was an airplane pilot. One of the first female captain in Nigeria.
  • She flew the like of Nelson Mandela, Red Cross plane during the Angolan war and Rwandan Genocide. She got her airline pilot license at 21. Sadly she died of breast cancer in 2012 Tosan was just 11 then.


  • Tosan has an elder brother Toju who is a Dj.
  • Tosan Evbuomwan initially started playing soccer and was even in the Newcastle Upon Tyne Academy team at age eight.
  • He made the switch to basketball at age 14 after watching his father  play for Wickham Warriors in New castle.
  • Torisesan wears pink sneakers in solidarity to cancer patients all around the world, and also wears jersey number 20 in remembrance of his mums birth date.

  • While attending the Royal grammar school Newcastle Upon Tyne, he helped kick start the basketball program there with a friend.
  • He further featured for Newcastle under 18 team and Luol Deng camp which brought him limelight. – He ranked 4th overall at the camp which highlighted top 40 players in the UK.

“At my camp I saw Tosan’s versatility to be his biggest strength,” Deng said. “At his size he was able to bring the ball up and cause all kinds of mismatches. He just impacted the game in so many ways at both ends”. Luol Deng

  • The adaptable forward made his debut for the England national team at the 2017 Haris Memorial Tournament held in Manchester, England.
  • Subsequently, he also showcased his talents at the 2018 FIBA European Championship.
  • Tosan was a very bright student little wonder after viewing highlights sent by his Dad, Princeton University snapped him up.

  • In just three seasons, Evbuomwan has left an indelible mark at Princeton, culminating in an impressive journey to the Sweet 16.
  • To his credit he has two-time All-Ivy League First-Team selection and was also named 2022 Ivy league player of the year has scored 1,009 points in three seasons.
  • The 2022 Ivy League Player of the Year averaged career highs of 16 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game as a junior during the 2021-22 season while also making the 2022 NABC District 13 First Team.
  • As a senior he averaged 14.8ppg, 6.3rpg and 4.7apg.
  • He also helped Princeton defeat Missouri 78-63 to get to the sweet sixteen in March Madness.
  • He entered the 2023 NBA Draft as an early entrant but was undrafted. He is currently an unrestricted free agent.
