In the past few years, the basketball landscape has frequently witnessed emerging talents from surprising corners of the globe seizing the spotlight and astonishing us with their exceptional abilities. Among these, Nuni Omot, a promising young player from South Sudan, has caught the attention of the basketball community.

Nuni Omot, born ‘Anunwa Nuni Omot’ on November 3, 1994, in Juba, South Sudan, endured the challenges and difficulties inherent in growing up in a nation ravaged by war.

At the tender age of three, he and his family sought sanctuary in Kenya, fleeing the civil war that plagued their homeland.

After his family’s relocation to the United States through the Lutheran Refugee Service, Omot initially pursued football as a wide receiver and also dabbled in soccer.

However, a significant growth spurt prompted him to shift his primary focus to basketball.

Omot averaged of 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game as a senior at Mahtomedi High School, Minnesota.

He also earned All-conference and honorable mention All-State accolades in his final year.

His remarkable abilities and relentless dedication led to a scholarship offer from Baylor University, where he became a valuable member of the Baylor Bears basketball team, competing in the fiercely competitive Big 12 Conference.

As a forward, his remarkable versatility on the basketball court coupled with his impressive shooting skills and extraordinary athleticism, played a pivotal role in guiding the team to numerous victories and a remarkable journey in the NCAA tournament.


Standing at an impressive 6ft 9inches, Omot plays in the small forward position.

Following the conclusion of the 2018 NBA draft, Omot went undrafted and later joined the Golden State Warriors for the 2018 NBA Summer League. On September 25, 2018, he inked a training camp deal with the Brooklyn Nets.


Unfortunately, Omot was waived by the Nets and subsequently signed for their G-League affiliate(Long Island Nets).


After his stint with G-league affiliate, Omot signed for Macedonian side MZT Skopje in July of 2019.

Playing only four months with the team he inked a deal with Dutch side ZZleiden in the Dutch Basketball League.

Although this was also shortlived as a result of the pandemic.

Nuni Omot signed for Turkish side Tofas and was later loaned to Trefl Sopot in the Polish league.

He also played in the German and Puerto Rican league for Gießen 46ers and with Leones de Ponce respectively from July 2021 to august 2022.


He was included in the New York Knicks training rooster after signing a deal, but was later waived and played for their G league affiliate- Westchester Knicks.


Nuni Omot also had a brief stint with Lakeland Magic, G-league affiliate for Orlando Magic.


In April 2023, Omot embarked on a new chapter in his basketball career by joining the Egyptian club Al Ahly in preparation for their inaugural participation in the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

He made a memorable debut on April 26, contributing a team-leading 21 points in a resounding 92-73 victory over Ferroviário da Beira.

Fast forward to May 27 2023, and Al Ahly emerged victorious securing their first-ever BAL championship by defeating AS Douanes in a thrilling final.

Omot led the charge with an impressive 22-point performance.

To add to his accomplishments, Omot was honored with the prestigious title of BAL Most Valuable Player, thus becoming the first African player to ever receive this esteemed award.


Nuni Omot proudly represents his home country of South Sudan on the international stage.


He has been a part of the South Sudan national basketball team, contributing to their growth and development.

He made his debut for South Sudanese team in February 2022 and was also part of the squad that made history by qualifying South Sudan for their first ever world cup appearance after defeating Senegal earlier this year (February).
