To many Rena Wakama is obviously a new name, and it seems like a huge surprise with this latest announcement from Naija’s basketball apex body.

While basketball stakeholders both within and outside the country are enthusiastic about this recent development, ReboundNG took out time to dust up some facts about D’Tigress new head coach.

The name Wakama sounds familiar to the hit movie “Wakanda Forever” innit? but then that’s on a lighter mood.

  • Rena Wakama is Nigerian from Rivers State.
  • She grow up in Raleigh, North Carolina United States.
  • She was a 5’7 point guard at Wake Forest high school, North Carolina.

  • While a high school senior, she averaged 14.9ppg, 2.9apg, 3.2rpg  and 2.5spg.
  • She was named Cap-7 Most Valuable Player, McDonalds High School All-American nominee, All-District First Team and All-State First Team.
  • As a college senior, ranked second on the team averaging 10.5 points per game, played in 32 games and started 25.
  • Led the team in three pointers, ranks ninth in Catamount record books for made three pointers in a career with 100.
  • Fourth on the team in assists averaging 1.6 per game.
  • Former North Carolina Cap-7 Player of the Year, who showcased her exceptional skills as a standout player at Western Carolina University.

  • During her impressive four-year stint with the Catamounts, she made an astounding 121 starts.
  • In her senior year also she earned the prestigious Southern Conference All-Tournament Second Team accolade.
  • Not only excelling on the court, but she also secured the honor of being a three-time SoCon Academic Team awardee, showcasing her dedication both on and off the court.
  • In 2014, Rena Wakama earned a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation from Western Carolina University, demonstrating her commitment to personal and professional growth.
  • Continuing her educational journey, she went on to complete her MBA at Manhattan College in 2019, further enriching her knowledge and skills.
  • With a solid foundation in both therapeutic recreation and business administration, Wakama brings a diverse range of expertise to her endeavors.

Wakama pursued a professional basketball career that took her to various destinations.

She showcased her skills in the United Kingdom and also participated in the FIBA African Basketball League.

Additionally, her talents led her to proudly represent the Senior Female Nigerian National Team, a honor that she embraced with passion and dedication.

Rena Wakama’s profound knowledge in therapeutic recreation and business administration equips her with a versatile skill set.

Her managerial experience exemplifies her extensive exposure and finesse in handling diverse challenges.

With such a wealth of expertise at her disposal, she stands as a true asset in any professional setting. Lets cast some light on her managerial prowess;

  • Director Of Basketball Operations at Manhattan College (two years).

  • In her role as an assistant coach, Wakama takes charge of nurturing and guiding the growth of the wing/guard position players.

  • Wakama played a pivotal role in the development of two of her players (Davis and Brazil Harvey-Carr), guiding them towards the achievement of postseason All-MAAC honors in the 2021-2022 season.
  • Served as the team’s academics and community service liaison officer.
  •  Wakama also oversees the program’s annual #playGREEN kids summer camp.
  •  She is the daughter of Rosana Oba and also has two sisters, Yvonne and Mina.

She has been with Manhattan University for Six years(2 as Director basketball operations and 4 as assistant coach).

D’Tigress has been without a head coach since the  resignation of Otis Hughley in 2022.

Rena’s contract is said to run for two years as she is expected to lead the team to the  upcoming 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, scheduled to hold in Kigali Rwanda from July 28th to Aug 6th 2023.
